On February 9th, 2020 The Lake Minnetonka Klondike Dog Derby, a world-class sled dog race, will introduce the sport of mushing to the Twin Cities community. The 8-dog, 40-mile race will run along the shores of Lower Lake Minnetonka but will start and finish on Water Street in the heart of historic Excelsior, Minnesota.
Ostrom Creative was approached to be the official Dog Derby creative and marketing partner by Founder and Race Coordinator, Bethany Hway. For a year a half, our tasks included: branding the derby, building and managing the website, content creation for social media, promotions for fundraisers, promotions for the race, and a variety of race day needs including the Start/Finish banners and the official race guide.
As the design lead, I was responsible for creating the various collateral needs, keeping the website up to date with the latest content and information in a timely manner, and managing the account.

James Dayton Design is a full-service architectural firm based in Minneapolis with a focus on contemporary design solutions. In February of 2019, founder James Dayton unexpectedly passed away and months later, the design studio found themselves at a crossroads.
JDD approached Ostrom Creative in need of a rebrand that would represent the growing company while honoring James Dayton’s legacy.
Working with our copywriter, I led the effort to concept four distinct route options. We presented mood boards, high-level descriptions, word clouds, and web mockups imagining what a fresh homepage could look like.
We suggesting incorporating elements of James Dayton in a variety of ways — utilizing his signature or writing in a logomark iteration, playing up his expertise and accolades that the company was founded upon in the way they tell their story, alluding to making history with history: James Dayton made his mark, now we’re making ours, or keeping the photography people-focused with JD at the center.

Founded in Wausau, Wisconsin in 1953, Wausau Tile Inc. is a preeminent manufacturer of architectural products. Between their sub-brands Tectura Designs and Wausau Made, the company offers custom precast concrete, site furnishings, architectural pavers, precast terrazzo, and terrazzo tile for commercial spaces.
At the start of 2018, our team proposed that we develop a creative platform to serve as a new foundation for all Tectura Designs marketing executions in order to increase the brand equity. It had been three years since Tectura had been created as a sub-brand, and it was due for a cohesive toolkit that included a solidified set of brand standards, tone and voice rules, and design assets to elevate the brand’s overall aesthetic and messaging.

Founded in Wausau, Wisconsin in 1953, Wausau Tile Inc. is a preeminent manufacturer of architectural concrete, terrazzo and metal products. Between their sub-brands Tectura Designs and Wausau Made, the company offers custom precast concrete, site furnishings, architectural pavers, precast terrazzo, and terrazzo tile and slabs for commercial spaces.
At the start of 2017, the Tectura Designs brand was ready for a redesign and reconfiguration of their five product division catalogs. The project spanned three months – requiring a full audit of brand assets. Working closely with account managers and the client, I developed a consistent system that was applied across the divisions. Each catalog contained: a table of contents with a high-level introduction to the Tectura Brand, a historical spread highlighting their 60 years of quality and innovation in the industry, an introductory spread to the specific product division, two project spotlight spreads, and hardworking spreads that either highlighted subcategories or series. Patterns, system equipment, and swatches were also considerations dependent on the particular division catalog.

The program launched on National Jerky Day (June 12) with a portion of the proceeds going directly to Team Rubicon.

The redesign of the Schwan’s Home Service Catalog worked in tandem with the layout creation for the March/April issue of 2016. I was one of four designers who worked with copywriters, brand strategists, social media coordinators, and producers to establish new design elements and rules as well as a long-term strategy for the Schwan’s Home Service Catalog. Tasks I assisted with included: concept development for each issue, “inspiration” page concepting, content organization and design for standard page layouts, photoshoot concepting, and pre-production deck design. I also had the opportunity to observe the final photoshoot.

The popcorn brand Corny Island was developed through a rapid prototyping process for General Mills. In preparation for exhibiting the case study on Periscope’s website and the Packaging & Retail Group’s emails, more assets needed to be created in order to flesh out the brand beyond the original package. Combining elements from the packaging with some research on classic carnival and circus designs, I decided to focus on creating assets that would help develop the idea of the place Corny Island, and what one could encounter while at the carnival grounds.
